In 5 CONT July, 1864, when Gen. Early invaded Maryland, this regiment 5 CONT took an active part in checking the Confederate advance, and 5 CONT part of it fought gallantly in the battle of Monocacy under 5 CONT Gen. Wallace. During its service the regiment lost 45 men 5 CONT killed in battle and 86 died of wounds and disease. It was 5 CONT engaged at Loudoun heights, Poolesville, Monocacy, Aqueduct, 5 CONT Maryland heights, Harper's Ferry, Gettysburg, Duffield Station 5 CONT Monocacy, and in several skirmishes along the line of the 5 CONT Baltimore & Ohio railroad. Those whose terms of enlistment 5 CONT expired in the fall of 1864 were mustered out, and the veterans 5 CONT and recruits were assigned to the 13th Md. infantry. 5 CONT 5 CONT 5 CONT Thirteenth Infantry. 5 CONT 5 CONT Col., Roger E. The organization of this regiment was commenced at 5 CONT Frederick City on Aug. 15, 1861, and on Dec. 13 it was mustered 5 CONT into service for three years. Companies A, B, D and I were 5 CONT recruited in Frederick county; C in the city of Baltimore; E , 5 CONT F, and H in Washington county; G in Baltimore, Frederick and 5 CONT Carroll counties; and K in Frederick county and the city of 5 CONT Baltimore. During the winter of 1861-62 it served with Gen. 5 CONT Banks and in the following spring marched with that commander 5 CONT up the Shenandoah Valley as far as Winchester, when it was 5 CONT assigned to the duty of guarding the line of the Baltimore & 5 CONT Ohio railroad. When Banks was driven out of the valley the 5 CONT regiment was concentrated at Harper's Ferry, where it remained 5 CONT until the Union troops again the valley, when it resumed the 5 CONT work of guarding the railroad. After Gen. Pope's defeat at the 5 CONT second battle of Bull Run the regiment opposed the passage of 5 CONT the Potomac river at the several fords and ferries near the 5 CONT mouth of the Monocacy, and was then concentrated at Harper,s 5 CONT Ferry, where it was surrendered with the garrison on Sept. 15, 5 CONT 1862. The men were paroled and after being exchanged the regi- 5 CONT ment was assigned to duty along the Potomac in the southern 5 CONT part of the state. In the Gettysburg campaign it formed part 5 CONT of Lockwood's brigade, and on the second day of the battle of 5 CONT Gettysburg was in the thickest of the fighting on Culp's hill 5 CONT and was one of the regiments that moved to the relief of 5 CONT Sickles, corps, where it assisted in the final repulse of the 5 CONT Confederates under Gen. Longstreet. After the battle of Get- 5 CONT tysburg it marched with the Army of the Potomac in pursuit of 5 CONT Lee as far as the Potomac river, when it was assigned to the 5 CONT duty of guarding the line of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad. In 5 CONT July, 1864, when Gen. Early invaded Maryland, this regiment 5 CONT took an active part in checking the Confederate advance, and 5 CONT part of it fought gallantly in the battle of Monocacy under 5 CONT Gen. Wallace. During its service the regiment lost 45 men 5 CONT killed in battle and 86 died of wounds and disease. It was 5 CONT engaged at Loudoun heights, Poolesville, Monocacy, Aqueduct, 5 CONT Maryland heights, Harper's Ferry, Gettysburg, Duffield Station 5 CONT Monocacy, and in several skirmishes along the line of the 5 CONT Baltimore & Ohio railroad. Those whose terms of enlistment 5 CONT expired in the fall of 1864 were mustered out, and the veterans 5 CONT and recruits were assigned to the 13th Md. infantry. 5 CONT 5 CONT 5 CONT Thirteenth Infantry. 5 CONT Col., Roger E.
